Aashvicorporation. In a surprising turn of events, Vietnam’s football team experienced a significant setback at the 2023 Asian Games, failing to advance beyond the group stage after an impressive semifinal run in the previous edition.

During the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia, Vietnam emerged as the shining star of the ASEAN region. They topped their group with a flawless record, even defeating Japan in their final group-stage match.

In the knockout phase, Vietnam continued their success by eliminating Bahrain and Syria, earning a spot in the semifinals. However, their journey was halted by South Korea, who defeated them 3-1. In the battle for the bronze medal, Vietnam also fell short against the United Arab Emirates.

Although they didn’t secure a medal, Vietnam’s performance at the 2018 Asian Games was undeniably impressive. Unfortunately, this success did not carry over to the 2023 edition of the tournament.

The Vietnamese national team at the 2023 Asian Games failed to replicate the achievements of their predecessors, and they couldn’t even progress past the group stage.

Vietnam started their 2023 Asian Games campaign on a positive note, defeating Mongolia with a score of 4-2. However, in their next two matches against Iran and Saudi Arabia, Vietnam struggled to put up a fight. They suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Iran and a 3-1 loss to Saudi Arabia.

As a result, Vietnam found themselves in the third position in Group B. Moreover, they couldn’t compete for one of the best third-place finishes in other groups due to their lower point total.

Vietnam ended up as the sole Southeast Asian team unable to advance to the knockout stage of the competition. Meanwhile, Indonesia, Thailand, and Myanmar still held hopes of progressing further in the 2023 Asian Games.
